Nurturing Your Green Thumb

An occasional summer-like day has many of us thinking about planting annuals and starting our vegetable gardens. But patience is a virtue because your hard work could be damaged by a late spring frost. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, mid-May is a safe time to plant:

  • Basil
  • Cucumbers
  • Kale
  • Peppers
  • Pumpkins
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Watermelon
  • Zucchini

If you’re looking to add a bit of color to your landscaping, when you plant your annuals depends on your risk tolerance. Michigan State University’s Climatologist says the Detroit area has a 75% chance of being frost free as of May 11th. If you want 100% certainty, wait until Memorial Day weekend.
