Designing a Kid-Friendly Patio

“Go outside and play” used to something you told your kids, but the beautiful designs of today’s outdoor furniture have adults reclaiming the back yard as a play space of their own. No worries. It’s easy to create a sophisticated patio that’s kid friendly, too. Here are three things to consider when choosing furniture and accents:

1. Durability. Depending on the age of your children, you’ll want to choose furniture that can stand up to their level of activity. Wood, wicker and aluminum are all good choices. You might choose tabletops that are extra sturdy, too, such as wood or tile instead of glass.

2. Style. Today’s outdoor furniture is as stylish as your indoor furniture and you’ll have a variety of styles and colors to choose from. Consider choosing cushions and finishes that are darker and can hide stains easier.

3. Safety. If your children are young, look for furniture that doesn’t have sharp edges. Decide if you prefer seating with cushions, which are soft, or sling seats that are easy to keep up. If you decide to purchase a firepit, consider gathering height style that puts the flames up high and choose one that has a removable cover that secures the coals when the fire isn’t in use. And make sure your accents and accessories aren’t breakable.

Follow these tips and you’ll easily create an outdoor space that can be enjoyed by all ages!
