Magnolia Makeover: All-American Farmhouse

A recent episode of Fixer Upper featured a young couple that wanted to modernize a farmhouse, with clean lines and industrial details. Of course Joanna and Chip Gaines knew exactly what to do to get it right. In her blog, Joanna shared her tips for achieving this modern farmhouse look.

Less Is More

It only takes a few simple elements to get the farmhouse look, such as a metal X accent on the island or a black hood over the stove. “We went with vertical paneling on the walls to put a spin on the classic horizontal shiplap. A few wood accents, gray cabinetry, and simple, clean-lined pendants hanging over the kitchen island tie in familiar and classic details that don’t overpower the room,” Joanna writes.

Wood Details

Joanna loves to use warm wood tones in most of her designs, and with this white kitchen she added details beneath the sink, on open shelving and on the floors. “These areas of the room stand out in a subtle way, while also bringing warmer tones to the neutral palette of the design,” she writes.

Multi-Purpose Storage

Joanna installed a plate rack in the cabinetry, which keeps your dinnerware close at hand, but is easier to style than open shelving. Cubbies above the plate rack were specifically built for cookbook storage. “Catering a custom storage cabinet, like this one, to your family’s specific needs is a good way to work your practical, everyday pieces into the kitchen’s design,” Joanna writes.
