Pantone’s Extracts Palette

Sugar and spice and everything nice … that’s what Pantone’s Extracts palette is made of. The fifth in our series of home color collections for 2013, Pantone makes the often-intimidating job of color selection simple and fun. Just look for the palette that resonates with you.

Extracts takes its cue from the spice cabinet, with tasty colors in luscious and light shades. The effect is comforting yet a little surprising, with pops of color that might not be expected in a home. The six-color collection sounds like a dessert bar, with Spiced Coral, Brandied Melon, Apple Cinnamon, Dusty Pink, Baked Clay and Green Banana.

Using a Settee

Smaller than a sofa, more elegant than a loveseat and sturdier than a bench, the settee is a multitalented piece of furniture. Designed to seat two, it’s the perfect seating solution in tight spots. In larger rooms, it can be the building block of a secondary grouping. And it can be put to use in most any room of your home.

Here are five ways to use a settee in your home:

carly settee

1. A settee instantly transforms an eating nook into a dining banquette. In pale green, our Thread & Feather Carly Settee is sophisticated and crisply tailored. With an ivory contrast welt, it creates a welcoming breakfast retreat where your family will enjoy a cup of Earl Gray and the New York Times.

4. A settee is a welcome addition to a nicely sized foyer, where it offers a place to take off your boots and put on your slippers. The antique linen finish of our Belmar Settee is a classic look, greeting guests in style. Its diminutive size won’t overpower the room.

giselle settee5. Finally, an armless settee is an unexpected alternative to the standard piano bench. Our Giselle Settee provides an air of sophistication to a rousing rendition of Chopsticks, with nail head trim that contrasts the charcoal upholstery. A patterned pair of pillows provides added interest as well as added back support.

Five Shades of Blue

Pablo Picasso had his Blue Period. From 1901 to 1904, he created monochromatic paintings in shades of blue that were considered somber works at the time. Today they are among his most popular – most likely because blue is soothing and neutral color, and easy to incorporate.

The Grace of Downton Abbey

drawingroom_Downton abbey

Get out the silver and steep the tea. Let’s chat about the Grantham and Crawley families over scones. Have you caught Downton Abbey, the PBS drama set in a gorgeous Edwardian country house during the 1920s? Whether it’s to enjoy the delicious drama of their lives or to soak in television’s most elegant setting, Downton Abbey is a guilt-free pleasure … it’s PBS after all!

While you might not have the official title of Lord or Lady, you can still bring a little Downton into each of your rooms with some of the fine pieces from Art Van Furniture.

Accent Chair

Start with an accent chair. Furniture was certainly functional during the Edwardian time, but decorative value definitely took precedence. Our Eloise Chair instantly adds class to your room. The carved wood has braiding detail for interest, and the two-patterned fabric application is very sophisticated. A pair near the fireplace will be divine.

From the Runway to Your Home

In September, the world’s top fashion designers unveiled their looks for Spring 2013 to a packed house of reporters, buyers and celebrity friends in New York’s Lincoln Center. Called Fashion Week, it’s the world’s first look at what the stylishly chic will be wearing when the leaves on the trees start to bud the following year.

The shapes, colors and patterns seen on the runway often make their way to home decor. Whether the inspiration is subtle or obvious, combining fashion with furnishings creates gorgeous pieces that dress up your home.

Take a look at some of the fashion-forward furniture available at Art Van Furniture, and the runway looks they resemble.

Calvin Klein

Known for minimalist, urban design, Calvin Klein showed this gorgeous layered black moiré over a white shift. With a wave pattern, it delicately frames what’s beneath. Our Metal Denmark Bed has a similar curved, fine-lined silhouette. In black finish, it will allow your linens to take center stage.

While not made of those same hip materials, our Shuffle Sofa creates similar drama with its striking red and black combination. The fun “Relax” pillow adds a pop of rock-inspired playfulness to the piece.
