Inside the Insight: PureSleep Specialists with Jamie Holman, Manager of Customer Support for PureSleep

You can buy a mattress from anywhere. Beds that arrive in boxes have become common place and it can all be done from your phone. Buying a mattress has become easier but knowing which one fits best in your sleeping environment requires much more than a sales pitch.

We sat down with Jamie Holman, Manager of Customer Support for PureSleep, to understand how the Sleep Specialists at PureSleep Mattress Stores remedy the sleep issues that customers face and what qualifies them to do so.

AV Reporter: Jamie, thanks for joining me today. So, what is a Sleep Specialist and what do they do to assist customers looking for mattresses?

Jamie: My pleasure. Well, a Sleep Specialist understands the problem of poor sleep and seeks to solve that using multiple approaches without solely focusing on mattresses. Sheets, pillows, and adjustable bases also contribute to our sleeping environment.

AV Reporter: A more wholistic take on sleep, that’s definitely unique in the industry. I understand you train Sleep Specialists to become gurus of the sleep game. What does that all entail?

Jamie: Sleep Specialists go through rigorous certification that includes sleep seminars, field research and required reading. Power Sleep by James Maas and Why We Sleep by Matt Walker, PhD are our bibles. Basically, it’s college all over again for some [laughs].

The biggest takeaway from this coursework is that we improve sleep through environment, behavior and equipment. Again, more than just your mattress.

AV Reporter: Sounds like Sleep Specialists are no slouches when it comes to sleep education. Speaking of which, what is your favorite aspect of sleep training?

Jamie: Oh boy, there’s so much. Generally, I love the pursuit of demystifying sleep. Sleep science is the same age of NASA, about 50 years old. There’s a lot to learn when compared to centuries of modern medicine research.

Another favorite is understanding why we sleep the way we do. We can only measure sleep quality by day performance. Knowing the why of sleep clues us into how to sleep better.

AV Reporter: I would have never guessed sleep science was so young, that’s wild. So, what separates Sleep Specialists from typical mattress sales approach?

Jamie: In short, Sleep Specialists are focused on solving a problem instead of only selling a product. Your thermostat might be too high or sheets too thick, overheating your body. TV or computer use before bed could also be the culprit.

There are many factors that affect your sleeping environment and your mattress might not be one of them. That’s where the Rest Test comes in to handle a lot of that leg work. Sure, we can sell you a mattress, but if that’s not the issue, you’ll be coming right back doubly upset.

AV Reporter: Solutions versus pure sales, that makes sense. Here’s a fun one. What are some myths about mattress that you’d like set the record straight about?

Jamie: Too many to count [laughs]. A popular one is that firmer is better. In general, harder surfaces are not comfortable. Think about sitting in a recliner compared to a park bench. Excess pressure causes tossing and turning at night, so it’s good to err on the side of softer.

Another good one is that kids can sleep on anything. Sleep is very fragile for kids so going cheap on a mattress isn’t going to get them the extra hours they need when they’re growing. Spoil your kids with great sleep for several years instead of toys they will forget about in a couple months.

AV Reporter: Soft is the way to go and we shouldn’t skimp on our kids’ mattresses, got it. Anything else you’d like to add about the mattress world?

Jamie: Here’s a pro tip. If you find yourself in a mattress store and all they talk about are mattress features instead of how it improves your sleeping environment, run. Run and never look back [laughs].

We hope you learned something valuable from our resident sleep guru Jamie Holman of our PureSleep Mattress Stores.

How To Fall Into Quality Sleep and Stay There

Enter into dreamland, every night.

For some, sleep is easy, but for a lot of us that’s not the hard part. Staying asleep is the real challenge and fortunately there are a few things you can do to make sure you keep counting sheep until the morning.

Your mattress, room temperature, and other habits are big factors for quality sleep. Some aspects you may not have considered can really impact things.

Ace your Rest Test.

Better sleep starts with the right mattress and using PureSleep Mattress Store’s Rest Assured Test is the best way to find out your mattress match. Discover your comfort level (plush, medium, firm), support level and preferred mattress type (innerspring, foam, hybrid) to determine the perfect mattress for optimal sleep.

Not entirely sure what your results mean? Our Sleep Specialists are ready to guide you to the mattress of your dreams, literally.

Think beyond your mattress.

Your mattress is only a part of your total sleep environment that helps you get good sleep that lasts. Adjustable power bases go that extra mile so you can position yourself for the greatest comfort. Improve your circulation, alleviate pressure points, reduce snoring and wake up feeling refreshed for the day.

In addition to adjustable power bases, pillows play a big role too. 30% of your sleeping comfort comes from your pillow. It’s truly the Bed for your Head™ that completes your sleep. Having your neck and shoulder’s natural curve properly in-line with your spine reduces the chances you’ll wake up mid-sleep wishing your neck wasn’t sore.

Keep it cool while you sleep.

It’s important to keep your room around the same temperature when your core temperature drops during sleep. In general, most people are comfortable around the 65-70-degree range. But these values are not set in stone. Set the thermostat to what feels best when you’re catching some shuteye.

With the combination of your sheets and comforter, having a warmer room exponentially increases the heat you feel while sleeping. In general, it’s best to have a room that’s a few degrees lower than your normal sleeping temperature.

Set yourself up for slumber.

Accelerate your body’s temperature change with a hot bath or shower so you can fall asleep faster. This also releases stress within your muscles and the steam clears your sinuses. This is the perfect way to set yourself up for long-lasting sleep that leaves you feeling recharged the next morning.

Ditch the blue light at bedtime.

It’s tempting to wind down with TV or your phone in bed, but it’s not the best for getting quality sleep. The blue light emitting from TVs, phone screens and computer screens sends similar signals to your brain that sunlight does, telling your body it’s time to wake up. This makes it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Trade those bright screens for reading or journaling about your day instead. You can also use programs that change the hue of your screen to a warmer tone that keeps your body in nighttime mode.

Take control of your sleep.

The power to getting quality and restful sleep all night is in your hands. Cultivating your sleeping environment goes a long way. The right mattress, pillow, adjustable base, Rest Assured Test and proper pre-sleep tactics will make sure you stay in dreamland the whole night.

Upscale Your Sleep with an Adjustable Power Base

Your Mattress Needs Support, Too

When thinking about your sleeping environment, how often do you consider your mattress base? If you had to spend a minute or two thinking about it, don’t fret. A lot of us take what we place our mattress on for granted. But what supports your mattress while it supports you? That’s where the magic of adjustable power bases come in.

Imagine being able to improve your sleep beyond just your mattress or your pillows. Prop yourself up to read a book or binge watch your favorite show in total comfort with a touch of a button. You’ll also being doing your body a favor by improving your circulation and reducing pressure on those areas that bother you the most.

Demystifying Power Bases

Even with these benefits, adjustable power bases are still a mystery to some. Simply put, these bases sit under your mattress where you can move them in recommended configurations or determine the angle that feels best using the remote. Elevating your body throughout the night improves your quality of sleep completely.

From a variety of positions, you can enjoy a lot of support while you sleep. Snoring becomes a thing of past as a slight incline from the power base frees your nasal passages. Say hello to better circulation, lowered blood pressure and heart rate as your heart does less work in the feet-up position.

If you’re dealing with medical conditions such as sleep apnea, chronic headaches or acid reflux (severe heartburn), power bases can lessen those burdens in the head-up position.

All types of mattress generally work with adjustable power bases. Typically, foam mattresses are the best pairing due to their flexibility while innerspring and hybrid models may not be optimal due to their rigidness. Be sure to check if a mattress is power base ready in its description.

Extra Bells and Whistles for Comfort

There are varying styles of power bases with additional features, but they are all functionally the same. If wireless remotes, Bluetooth technology, massaging functions and programmable positions pique your interest, these are all available.

Some power bases have a zero-gravity function which simulates a feeling of weightlessness so you’re less stiff in the morning and stay sleep through the night.

Master Your Bedroom in Style

Power bases aren’t solely for improving your health either. They’re also great for enjoying entertainment, candid conversation or unwinding from the day. Some models feature complete control from your phone via an app.

You can also experience theatre-style reclining from the comfort of your bedroom. And you can shake up your bedside chats by adjusting to different angles as those conversations go on.

 Come See for Yourself

Like a mattress, adjustable power bases are a worthy investment for your sleeping health. A great mattress gets even better with a power base under it. Your heart and body with thank you for deciding to give yourself some peace of mind every night.

If you’d like more information, stop by a PureSleep Mattress Store and try out an adjustable power base for yourself.

Five Tips for Mixing His and Her Style

His style is dark and rugged while her style is light and airy. Is it possible to design a home that suits them both? Yes! The trick is to combine the best of both worlds of his and her style through balance, texture, color and lines. Here are five things to consider when you’re sharing a home with the opposite sex:

1. Think about lines

The shape and scale of your furniture can be considered masculine or feminine. Feminine furniture focuses on curves, details and embellishment. It’s smaller in scale and lighter in style. Masculine pieces, however, focus on function. They tend to be larger and more angular in design. Marry both looks with clever combination. For example, choose a round ottoman to soften the feel of furnishings with masculine patterns.

2. Color and textures count

Another consideration when it comes to striking balance with his and her style is color and texture. Dark colors and heavy materials are masculine, while light colors and materials are feminine. Complement a light sofa, for example, by pairing it with dark draperies. Or make a masculine leather sofa feel more feminine by choosing one a light color, such as ivory.

3. Strive for equality

Keep his and her style in harmony by balancing masculine pieces with feminine furnishings that complement. In the dining room, for example, an industrial-look steel table can be paired with upholstered chairs.

4. Choose rooms

Strike a balance by using masculine and feminine styles in the right rooms. The bedroom, for example, is an area that often leans toward feminine. While you might want to forego an overwhelming amount of floral and curves, you can compromise and create an elegant look in simple patterns or light solids. The family room or den, however, tends to lean toward masculine style, but wood paneling and too much plaid can overwhelm. Instead, choose darker colors in smaller scale furnishings or soften with accessories, such as a floral rug in dark tones.

5. Accessorize

Accessories are often called the “woman’s touch,” and they can quickly offset too many masculine furnishings. Place a vase of flowers on a reclaimed wood end table, for example. Use damask toss pillows on a leather sofa. Or drape a soft blanket on the arm of a leather chair. While it’s easier to add feminine elements to a more masculine room, you can do the reverse, as well. A feminine room can find balance through masculine accessories, such as metal, wooden or natural items.
