3 New Color Trends for Spring 2018

This season’s color trends are both sophisticated and playful. Pink, blue, green and purple are important in all shades and are mixed throughout, while neutrals become bolder. Our Creative Director Broc Clark shares three color stories that will create cohesive palettes that get your rooms ready for spring.

Ultra Violet

Pantone’s Color of the Year 2018 is Ultra Violet, and it’s a big color story for spring. The neon trend has been going strong for years and it isn’t slowing down. This color communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking. It’s also reminiscent of the bold style of the 1980s.

Playful

This color story is young, bright and inspiring. Yellows and blues feel fresh, and a touch of guacamole green seals the deal. Use lots of stripes to bring in the fun.

Verdure

This color collection is driven by a love of the outdoors and a desire to experience nature. Mix multiple shades of greens, including colors that feature names like Pesto, Dewkist and Peridot. Add a pop of purple, and your room will feel like a garden.

Pantone 2018 Color of the Year: Ultra Violet

The global color experts from Pantone have named the 2018 Color of the Year, and it’s a dramatic one. Ultra Violet “communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future. Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.”

Inspiration for this color comes from musical icons such as Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix, who brought shades of Ultra Violet with their artistic expressions. In interiors, Pantone can “transform a room into one of extraordinary self-expression, or conversely its polish can tone down a room with subdued, modern pairings. Ultra Violet calls attention to a tufted couch, piece of art, or accent wall. As a color that can take you in so many directions, Ultra Violet makes a statement in any space, whether it’s one of tradition and elegance or unexpected boldness.”

Pantone’s Fluidity Palette Brings the Sea to Your Home

Taupe and beige can be serene, beautiful and blissfully neutral, but a room with color – lots of it! – will lift your spirits when you come through the door. From blue to purple to coral and yellow, color impacts your mood and your outlook. Combining colors, however, can be scary; you wouldn’t want your home to look like the circus came to town. But you also shouldn’t be afraid to get creative. That’s because the folks at Pantone – the global color experts – have expertly mixed together their 2014 home color collection, with nine palettes from which to choose.

Today, we’re featuring the Fluidity palette. Pantone describes it like this: “Gliding gracefully through watery channels, Fluidity is the palette that understands the inevitable human need for life-sustaining cool water tones rendered largely in dazzling blues and blue-greens. These cooling hues are underscored by shimmering sea grass shades and undersea-creature colors such as Absinthe Green, Violet Tulle, a blazing Samoan Sun, a Dewberry purple and two tones of eye-arresting orange-corals.”

We think these tropical colors would turn your living room into an oasis. Take a look at how we combined the palette to create a room with vavoom:

Beckett SofaRiviera Sofa

Start with a neutral sofa that can handle some punchy pillows. The Thread & Feather Beckett Collection, with shelter-style tufting, is the perfect backdrop for the turquoise and coral pillows. Or select Thread & Feather’s Riviera Sofa, which has more traditional lines. In a linen-like fabric, its light color sets off its deep purple velvet and black-and-white houndstooth toss pillows.
Norfolk Settee

Next, add accent seating in a bold color. The Thread & Feather Norfolk Armless Settee – in teal genuine leather – has simple lines and would be a nice complement to either sofa. If you’re not in love with teal, Thread & Feather offers several fabrics, so that you can customize for the look you want.

Afton Chair Henderson Chair

Colorful accent chairs are also a nice addition. The Thread & Feather Afton Chair features a bold pattern in grey and coral. Its straight lines are trimmed in a dark wood for a sleek, contemporary feel. Or add a splash of purple with Thread & Feather’s Henderson Chair. In rich velvet fabric with a dark wood trim, it’s both sophisticated and stylish.

Fluidity rug

Finally, add more color from this palette underfoot. Our Tarkan Collection Rug is made from 75% wool antique and vintage Turkish rugs with a patchwork technique. In emerald green, the rug plays with the other colors in the room, giving you the happy feeling of being seaside.

Rugged Individuals

Little House on the Prairie has come of age.

Pantone’s Rugged Individuals is the fourth in our series of home color collections for 2013, and if you’re a fan of anything outdoorsy or rustic, you’re going to love this palette.

Pantone makes the often-intimidating job of color selection simple and fun; you simply look for the palette that feels like you. Here’s how the company describes Rugged Individuals:

“From out-West to Outback, cowboy and cowgirl style rides again, imbued in Pantone’s Rugged Individuals Palette. The rugged individuals convey the legend that influences a look of the natural shadings of the vastness of the Prairie, and its interior trappings of polished leather, weather wood and animal hides.”

With colors named Stonewash Blue, Raw Sienna, Vintage Indigo Jeans, Baked Apple, Goat, Prairie Sand and Chipmunk, you might be tempted to start churning your own butter and making your own bread, but rest assured these colors look at home in a modern setting, too.

Of course, Art Van Furniture has the look. Take a peek at this Rugged Individuals family room:

Set the tone for the room by starting with our Bronze and Green Rug. Inspired by ethnic textiles, its rich hues are in colors of spices. While the colors are aged, its burst pattern gives the room a modern twist.

Next, add the Celia Sofa and Loveseat in Bronzy Taupe leather. While the covering is definitely rugged, the look of the collection is up to date and casual. The pillow-top design is not only inviting but is comfortable, as well. And the multicolored pattern toss pillows bring in more colors from the palette.

Celia Love SeatThe Santa Fe Rectangular Cocktail Table and End Table furthers the rustic flair of the room, with its natural slate tile inserts, rich dark chocolate finish, and durable design. On casters, the piece is mobile while its deep drawers offer convenient storage.

Square Cocktail TableAdd more storage to the room with a piece from our Summer Breeze Collection. The Three-Drawer Entertainment Center in a red finish is a great place to house your media for smaller rooms. Or chose the Gentleman’s Chest with eight drawers and two shelves that provide ample room for family room necessities such as games, DVDs, CDs and blankets.

Put one atop the Gentleman’s Chest as an eye-catching accent piece, or use a pair on end tables for task lighting. Then sit back, light a fire and pop in an old John Wayne DVD.
